Diya, the app’s built-in reading aid, is available. Diya can tell when a child is having difficulty with a passage when they are reading aloud and can intervene by offering encouragement or assistance. The child can ask Diya to assist them with reading a sentence or pronouncing a word they are unsure of at any time.

Children play mini word games as they advance through the app, and as they get better at them, they can win in-app prizes.

Use Google to Learn to Read

For kids ages 5 and up, Read Along (formerly Bolo) is a fun and free speech-based reading tutoring app.

By encouraging them to read aloud engaging stories and earn stars and badges with “Diya,” the amiable in-app assistant, it helps them advance their reading abilities in English and many other languages (Hindi, Bangla, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Spanish, & Portuguese).

When kids read, Diya pays attention to what they’re reading, gives them instant feedback for a job well done, and supports them when they run into difficulties—all while offline and without data!

How to use Google’s Read Along app

1. Go to the Google Play Store and download Read Along for Android for free.

2. Go over the privacy statement. According to Google, the app is free of in-app ads and works offline without Wi-Fi or data after the initial download of the app and its stories. Additionally, there is no need to sign in. If you would like your progress to be saved, you must grant it permission to record audio and take pictures. However, the company claims that voice data is evaluated locally on the device and is not transferred to Google’s servers. Click Got It if that’s okay with you.

3. Press and hold the virtual assistant Diya to allow the app to record audio so that it can hear you.

4. Give the virtual assistant Diya a tap and allow it to record audio so it can hear you out and respond.

5. Choose from a selection of stories to download, play a game, or explore the story library.

6. Press the narrative you wish to read. A digital storybook page will appear to you, with Diya at the bottom of the screen. There will be a star when you correctly read a word. You can tap the word to hear it spoken aloud if you get it wrong, and a red line will appear.
